Chapel Chat

Yesterday I received the most amazing email from a woman. It was a bit harsh and after my initial flesh reactions of anger and defensiveness, grace kicked in. I responded in LOVE and received love back in the form of a powerful ally. Leave it to God to affirm these actions by Thursday church. Doug talks of being careful of our approach with people. Read their heart. Drop the right bait..speak in love and let the spirit flow. Well, enjoy these exchanges and know that God is at work in His magazine!

Email from woman:

I read this in your magazine today. I have a question.
Why you did not take the time to ask that question to a
Black Child? Is this your way of telling our Children that
a Black Man can not be President? Is this a magazine for
White Families only ?

My Response:

Dear Mrs. ...,

Thank you for your candid and honest question! Unfortunately, my husband and I
are the only ones running this show so for any and all of our call outs we
simply send out the question through email. We send out to libraries, any school
contacts we have and homeschooling groups. Whoever responds is who ends up in
the magazine. We did not have a single black child respond! I can see your
point! We actually have long wanted a child of color to put on our COVER and I
have approached many black families when I am out and about. But no one has ever
once responded. The photo shoot is free and is held at a local park twice a
month! Perhaps you can help us with this??

In regards to your comments: "Is this your way of telling our Children that a
Black Man can not be President (and) Is this a magazine for White Families only?

I am going to chalk those comments up to someone who is passionate about their
beliefs. I am sure a mature woman such as yourself would not normally accuse a
perfect stranger of being racist right off the bat without ever having met
her? Instead, I urge you to partner with me in bringing more black families to
the cover and inside the pages of Lake Family Magazine.

Somehow you have my personal email address so I assume you may have some great
connections with schools or county agencies.
What do you say? Let's both be part of the solution instead of perpetuating the
problem.

I look forward to hearing back from you!

Blessings to you and your family,

Victory! Her response:

You sound like a lady I could get to know and like. I will not call you
anything
but one of God's Children, my sister in Christ. I was not upset just wanted to
share
what I was thinking and some others would too. I Believe you have looked for
families
for you cover when you tell me this. I would tell some family you are looking.
Please
don't take what I asked for mean. I am the Family/School Liaison at (local elementary school) Thank you for answering

Our conversation is continuing now as we partner in the black community...

Your approach is everything. I bet you had a similar initial reaction as I did...but someone was hurt by something I did INADVERTANTLY...I am glad that I was able to fix it. Glory To God!!!!!
Thank you Jesus! Perfect Love!

It's a Wonder we don't ALL have broken arms!

I was all excited to post this "look what fun things we do in OUR homeschooling hours" post. And then Amy called. Lol. Well, now I post it with a little reluctance...but it WAS fun. Lol... Amy and I were talking about how we remembered a time when if we got hurt at someone else's house WE'D be the ones who got into trouble! Ha! Times sure are different. Funny that someone getting hurt here has made me feel a bit guilty for any of the rowdy fun they finally talk me into. So while the following videos may not be well, 100% smart, they are still 100% fun and family oriented. Dad is involved. Mom is involved. And we play until we get tired or evidently the new rule: Until someone gets hurt!

And now I can't do anything so here we go.

Pretty much what we did at the art festival

Well...

I was hoping to leave the last post to be that wonderful video about salvation while I got busy with December issue. But lest I seem completely callous, we must address the dreaded trampoline incident! Lol

Suffice to say...when your friend calls you up and says: "You haven't read my blog yet have you?"
Yep, That would be a red flag.

Poor Em!

Yes, our first broken arm in this house....and not one of our own!
I guess we big girls should have been monitoring but alas, I do not think either one of us are the monitoring type! So while the whole crew was on the trampoline, the accident occurred. Lauren fell on Em's arm when jumping.

Of course, Amy was wonderful about it and went on about how kids get hurt etc. And kids surely do. We don't have rough housing kids so we don't get many serious injuries around here but multiple jumping kids is sure to result one!

We will be praying for Em! Let us know if there is anything we can do! And unfortunately, Jeff is saying there will likely be no more visitors allowed on the trampoline. :(
Sorry guys.

My Utmost For His Highest

If you have not been enjoying Oswald Chambers throughout your walk, you are surely missing something. Never have I read such powerful and right on devotions. In keeping with my holding on to the edge of God's Garment, I am saturating myself as much as I can in the Word...and when looking for an extra devotional this morning remembered my old friend. You acn take out the missionary word in this and just add Christian! You can wrap up the way Calvary teaches in this devotional. The life application here is truly God breathed. Enjoy. (emphasis added that really hit me)

THE METHOD OF MISSIONS

"Go ye therefore, and teach (disciple) all nations." Matthew 28:19

Jesus Christ did not say - Go and save souls (the salvation of souls is the supernatural work of God), but - "Go and teach," i.e., disciple, "all nations," and you cannot make disciples unless you are a disciple yourself. When the disciples came back from their first mission they were filled with joy because the devils were subject to them, and Jesus said - Don't rejoice in successful service; the great secret of joy is that you are rightly related to Me. The great essential of the missionary is that he remains true to the call of God, and realizes that his one purpose is to disciple men and women to Jesus. There is a passion for souls that does not spring from God, but from the desire to make converts to our point of view.

The challenge to the missionary does not come on the line that people are difficult to get saved, that backsliders are difficult to reclaim, that there is a wadge of callous indifference; but along the line of his own personal relationship to Jesus Christ. "Believe ye that I am able to do this?" Our Lord puts that question steadily, it faces us in every individual case we meet. The one great challenge is - Do I know my Risen Lord? Do I know the power of His indwelling Spirit? Am I wise enough in God's sight, and foolish enough according to the world, to bank on what Jesus Christ has said, or am I abandoning the great supernatural position, which is the only call for a missionary, viz., boundless confidence in Christ Jesus? If I take up any other method I depart altogether from the methods laid down by Our Lord - "All power is given unto Me . . , therefore go ye."

Brilliance in a Two Year Old..

Well, I've blogged a bit and am soon going to be on the magazine train...that would be ON it not PULLING it! Can I get a woohoo?
Neat that it will be the Christmas issue...

but I shall end with the brilliance of my daughter Catherine.

I have HAD it with nursing. Sorry Dear M but it is O-V-E-R!
And by over I mean, only when I absolutely positively cannot get out of it over. Lol

So I was saying No AGAIN and decided to sing it to her:
No more nursey
No more nursey
no more nursey
no more no more no more.

Well she thought this was HILARIOUS and came up with this song of her own.

Bob the Builder! (to which I replied naively)
Can you fix it?!?
Bob the Nursey!! (and she waits with eyebrows raised expectantly for me to say:
"Yes you can!!!!!"

I nearly DIED. It was obvious that she KNEW I had to say "Yes you can" so she just changed the words up to nursey and well, there ya' go! Works for her!

She went on to a second verse with all the words changed, cracking herself up as she went on singing:

Bob the Nursey,
can we nurse you?
Bob the Nursey,
YES YOU CAN!

Now I ask you, is that cute or WHAT???

Blessed Peace! Blessed Assurance! Blessed Faithfulness! Blessed Peace!

A few days ago I saw the most AMAZING movie. It is called "Facing the Giants".

God used this movie to change my life and direction in one fail swoop. I am going to try not to wax evangelical in too lengthy a fashion
but suffice to say that this was a big turning point for me.

Church today...brought up the rear (so to speak) in affirmation. LOL

The movie, which I am sure most of you have seen but if you haven't rent it NOW- (It is by the same producers as Fireproof I think)themed itself on "With God all things are possible"...and all the different ways you can say that. With God, what is impossible? When God is for you, who can be against you? Coming back against the odds because when you take up with God...when you throw in with creator of the very UNIVERSE, then you are in some RIGHTEOUS company. Literally and figuratively!

So the big epiphany which I already knew but somehow did not apply was that I have been acting as if God purchased this magazine and gave it to me. When really, He purchased the magazine and I TOOK it.

I bet my blood pressure has dropped 20 points since last night. I mean it.

Surrender is a funny thing. You can talk about it. You can TRY to surrender, but there is nothing like when you actually DO.

Through this movie and for the next couple days all I wanted to do was live for the Lord 24/7. I mean we all SAY we do that but I mean in every action...every word...every situation, experience, conversation. It has been the Living Water that the Word speaks of. I have not known this peace in eons. My WHOLE heart is free and my spirit feels JOY! UNSPEAKABLE! and I cannot hide it. I want to SHOUT from the rooftops...COME! Taste the Living Water!

So I was grateful, for this movie...that made me see that the burdens we carry our not ours but HIS and when we WAIT WAIT WAIT upon the Lord, great things will come. But the key is, even if they DON'T, it DOES NOT matter...your heart is filled with the one who quenches every thirst. A couple days ago, I had started the day a little sad...went out and got filled with the Chris Tomlin song that I posted in an earlier post (Everlasting God) and then finished up with Facing the Giants.

So it should be no surprise that when I waltzed myself into church today (which I nearly missed! Only Lauren made it with me!) that the first song was none other than..You are the Everlasting God, Everlasting God...) Well that was not going to be affirmation enough....Doug went on to teach about the Woman at the Well...and the LIVING WATER Jesus offered her.

He spoke of how we as Christians, choose to drink of every OTHER source than the Lord. He compared the living water that leaves you thirsting NO MORE to the stagnant water in a cistern, that we continually go to...and drink from...and end up thirsting again. He asked WHY do Christians do that?
I wished he had answered that why. Because I would actually like to know!

WHY do we continue to give back what God gives us? Forego the living water for the stagnant? WHY? Tasting what I have been tasting for two days leaves me with head shaking and I must confess, fearful that I will forego it again.

You see, I have build MY cistern to hold self strength. Not braggarty, self righteous self strength...but pure, unadulterated: I-CAN-DO-IT self strength. I believe that all our gifts if not in complete surrender to the Lord can become weaknesses and our weaknesses when in complete surrender can become great strengths. When my capability is not in surrender, I get pulling this train until I finally fall and it runs me over. But it never kills me. It just puts me out for a day or two until I heal and then I stand back up and pick up the yoke and start pulling again. OUCH. That hurts just to SAY it. So I have been drinking from the great stagnant cistern of "I CAN".

But not anymore.

I cannot stop smiling. I cannot stop praying. I cannot stop thinking of anything but WOW. Finally God can do with this magazine, networking group, family, LIFE what HE wills because I finally put down the pulling of the train (which is LITERALLY what if felt like) and stepped OFF the track and let God blow the thing on by with a bat of an eyelash.

I can rest now as I walk through each moment..asking God, USE ME Lord, GIVE ME THE WORDS, draw them to YOU Lord through your light they see shining through me.

He layed the magazine at my feet and said "What are you going to do with this?"
And I (tearing up now) steadied my stance, bent my legs, put my back into it and lifted it up...lifted up the train. I didn't cast a second glance but instead turned around...my back to God and started pulling.

It nearly killed me! Lol

But He had a plan. I wonder if He didn't let me do it because His plans are so great He knew I could NEVER do it so He waited until all the "pull" left me and I gave it up. For sweet, sweet Living Water...satisfying me and leaving me wanting NOTHING more than to follow Him around like a child wanting more, more, more.

I cracked my cistern of self strength today and pray I don't try to patch it up anytime soon. Will you pray that for me? Will you pray that I stay in surrender to the one who knows the love and desire in my heart to do nothing more to serve HIM and HIS people?

Funny how that is all I want to do...but even in that you can do it in your own strength.

I will start praying HEAVILY over the magazine...the advertisers...the people who read it. I will pray for the printer. The layout guy. Myself even! I will pray that God will keep this magazine in His favor to accomplish HIS purpose and to keep me diminishing and others flourishing. I pray He blesses this endeavor and purpose of my heart with His whole self that He might be glorified and you may all be witness to it.

I pray He bless the upcoming Christian Networking Group. I pray that He grow it and bring businesses and people who REALLY love the Lord and want to lift each other up and serve and thereby also getting blessed in return. I pray that CCOTL be Blessed to the Parking Lot and beyond and I stand ready to receive it as He wills it.

I thank God Almighty that He saw fit to release me from this bondage. I thank the makers of this movie and Chris Tomlin for being tools of their maker. I thank Doug and CCOTL who are walking through much of this with me in one way or the other and supporting the endeavors of this family. Who know my heart and motivation and weakness and stand ready to pray, admonish, advise, lift up, spur on and generally just show good old fashion bearing up.

Yep brethren, Surrender is a GOOD thing.

Something bothering you?

Ya'll should try it. ;)

The Menu!

Thought I'd post our menu! If you want to, post yours on the comment section or better yet, on your blog too!

The Turkey: EASY! Shake poultry season on the inside of the bird and stuff with stuffing. Rub butter ALL over the bird with your fingers, cover with foil and bake as directed. Take foil off last 1/2 hr to 45 min. to get golden brown skin. Perfect every time. RESIST urge to cut into it for a full 1/2 hr for juiciest results. Use a MEAT THERMOMETER to check for doneness. I don't care what they say about not stuffing your bird. I always stuff mine AND when I have purchased a frozen one I have defrosted in the sink overnight and no body died.

Stuffing- I sautee lots of onions, celery and fresh parsley and add to herb stuffing that has been cooked. Add salt, pepper and poultry season to taste. YUM! I have tried all sorts of different stuffing recipes but like Amy said, this one is my Mom's, the one I grew up with and I just can't seem to get away from it. It says "Thanksgiving" to me.

Candied Yams---Now, I'm not braggin' but suffice to say, every time a man tastes my yams, they ask their wife to get my recipe. OUCH! Ok, I cannot tell a lie. That only happened once. But it made me feel pretty good! (and bad for her, lol)
Ooh, I have a FUN idea girls...let's have a little get together at my house and everyone bring their star Thanksgiving side dish to taste and then exchange recipes if we want? Who's in? (Yes, I'll disclose my candied yams recipe there)

Green bean casserole replete with the onion topping thingies. I don't like GBC but my hubby does. It is so BLAH. Recipes welcome.
and/or
Fresh green beans..my fave.

Homemade Mashed Potatoes: trick is to use whole milk, not too much butter and a couple dashes of garlic powder. TRUST me, your taters will take center stage!
I had some once with carmelized onions too and they were great..I may do that this year.

Deviled Eggs...another winner recipe...no olives or weird stuff in my eggs..just plenty of mayo, a dash a white vinegar and salt and pepper. Topped with paprika of course! A traditional favorite!

Cranberry Sauce OF COURSE..jellied and whole. The whole makes for a KILLER turkey sandwich next day.

Brown and Serve Rolls...though with all the bread baking in this house, you would THINK the kids would want homemade. I have not perfected the homemade roll making though....

I like to try a new recipe each year but can't think of what I did last year.

PLENTY of pies...always too many. Two pumpkin, 1 apple and one chocolate cream.

Coffee and soft drinks.

And a bowl full of pant extenders for all!!!

How about YOU??

P.S. Wow, I feel warm and fuzzy. Just want to say I love you guys and thanks for being my new family here. You gals are the BEST. And for all you out of towners and token men in the mix, you're really great too! I can't believe I have been here long enough to remember Amy's mashed pototoes or Tif's pumpkin clay...or that I can be sad that New Hope isn't doing their Harvest Festival. Sigh. I love it here. Love it. Love it. Love it. But I tell you, it would be NOTHING without each one of you. Love you all! Sheesh, I have to get dressed for church!

What are YOU doing for Thanksgiving?

I am feeling Holiday-y. Lol Let me know what your plans are for Thanksgiving! What you cook, who will come, who will do what that makes you crazy.

What Caused the Economic Crisis?

Well, in a nutshell, THIS. I am not pro-Bush by any means but this really IS what caused the problem. It goes a little quick if you are not really well-versed in all this stuff but someone wrapped it up nicely.

That Last Post

Was a big God story that I wrote and then I hit publish all I got was "error" and POOF, all that was left was the title.

Not that bad really...

I put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness...

and the clouds lifted and the sonlight appeared. :)

I heard this amazing song on the way out yesterday morning and it reminded me about how GOOD God is! The lyrics just spoke to my heart! WAIT upon the Lord, He is our HOPE, our DELIVERER! He is the EVERLASTING God who does not faint or grow weary!

Listen!

Put on the Garment of Praise!

Rain in my soul and in my front yard

It's raining right now.

My soul feels rainy today....when I feel this way...I try to remember that God gives us women emotions for a reason. I heard them once compared to a swing. What is a swing meant to do? Swing of course.

But the anchor of the swing is secure, right? I saw a beautiful painting once of a woman swinging high but the hand of God was holding the ropes.

If we live OUTWARD from our Christ center instead of in the middle ground of our soul (mind will and emotions) then we will always be starting at the right place. Our perfect union with Christ.

Otherwise if if we live from our soul, then we live from the place where our life's experiences have left life patterns good or bad....but letting the light and life of Christ flow outward from our union center keeps things cleansed and in perspective.

YOUR VOTE

I am not big on the abortion issue as I am a FIRM FIRM FIRM believer in teaching abstinence which really means sheparding of the heart which really means teaching good parenting so it is hard for me to soap box on that one. And also I have a few issues with the idea that MAKING people choose this or that takes away free will..which God does not even do though I am sure any half educated theologian could take me down on that one.

But with gay marriage it is the deterioration of the family unit. Without family, there is no reason to build but instead everything is for immediate gratification. All things are consumable only for a short amount of years. NO need for schools, no need for anything child related. Eventually if the gay population rivaled the heterosexual one, along with the spreading lie that family is a negative, then the very fall of mankind could, in theory, ensue. You can claim all the adoption and ways that gay couples can get children you'd like but I say that if you cannot create life between the two of you, then you have to be an IDIOT to not be suspect of the why not.

Man. Woman. Any questions?

Checklist for Parents: Provision

I am combining two of these in this post because they go together.

Am I planning and providing for a material inheritance for my child (money, help in establishing a business, building a house, etc.)?
"For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children." (2 Cor 12:14)

We all love to give to our children but can you imagine if we cut half of what we gave to them in their liftetime of living with us and saved it in cash invested and then gave it to them when they married (sons or daughters) or went out on their own? (sons)
And that would be just for the people who couldn't save extra. I mean, some would say "we don't have it to save" but we all know we are the richest people in the world. Very few of us are ACTUALLY poor...maybe not managing it well but poor? Nah...I love to give to my kids too...my mother loves to give to them even more! Lol But I want to give them something later. I want to give each girl a home or a financial gain of some kind. But what I am giving them more is the knowledge that they can turn a profit from home and save it up. Can you imagine what their husbands would think of them when they come into a marriage with 50,000 that they earned? It's possible. It really is.

I hope I get a bunch of home body hubbies for my girls that don't take them too far away...I want us all to live on the same block! Please?

Am I growing and maturing in a way that will provide a spiritual heritage for my child?
The righteous man walks in integrity; His children are blessed after him." (Proverbs 20:7) and "But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children's children, to such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them." (Psalm 103:17-18)

How much more important is this than a financial legacy? Well actually, I am not sure it is MORE important. Is one scripture more important than another? Interesting thought. I prefer the idea that we should be doing ALL of scripture...not just choosing the "most important" ones. But of course, this is one that weighs heavily on me since it is much more difficult. Money comes and goes. Easy come easy go right?
But a spiritual endowment....now that takes a lifetime of effort and example and boy do I fall short.

If our children don't become MORE spiritually mature and knowldegable than we are when they are still in our care, I don't know...it seems that we have failed our job there. Our children should surpass us...we should be BUILDING family legacy not just laterally moving it from one to another. Some time ago Rachel really began surpassing my biblical knowledge by sheer ability to retain our study better than myself. I liked it. But is should go even further than that. At least for a lot of us. Many of us weren't raised under the best and most Godly of circumstances...and so if we raise our children in the ways of the Lord than their lives should show marked improvement and maturity at a younger age than we produced fruit.

Think about building a financial inheritance and a spiritual heritage for your children today.

Blessings.

My CUTIE-PIE nephew!

Here is 5 year old nephew Preston (Crystal's son) being the object of my affection, ardently singing "Oh Happy Day" LOVE the big finish!

Stream of Thought

The hubs made me pancakes and eggs for breakfast. It was delicious.

The news media has me so sick I can barely stand it. There is NO news media that is not openly biased. Whole stories are spun one way or the other. Fox and ABC, CNN adn NBC...I remember being idealistic about the media and being taught that it was a huge responsiblilty reporting the news..and how it should be "just the facts maam" with no spin. Jaded am I and fiercely worn from the ugliness of the world.

Kate is hilarious and completely secure in her life. I like to see her strut her little stuff around as if she owns the world. And she does...for now. Every kid should feel this secure in their homes.

We're headed back to Eustis here in a few and I am glad, I guess. I'm tired and have been dreaming the strangest of dreams. I have always dreamt vividly and strangely and always remembered them well. I feel these recent ones are really trying to tell me something though and I am going to listen as best I can. I know I sound like a whack, but there it is.

I found the most AWESOME math curriculum anywhere and no one will listen to me. Lol
It is touted by every respected homeschooler around from Duffy to...whoever and a real look at it would likely change anyone's mind on math. It is amazing.

Nov issue is at print and if it prints PROPERLY this time, it really will be our BEST ISSUE EVER. No...REALLY. You will be SO proud at how NON BIASED the election piece for kids is. But look closely at the kids answers to the "If I were president" question...you can see their parents answers in a lot of them, lol.

That clay piece that Rachel made is completely from her own head. It is supposed to be representative of that fish in Finding Nemo with the light thingy hanging down. She made it in clay class where they choose their own subject. She was a star and in the shadow of big sis a lot of the time, I really am glad she found a place where she gets to shine alone. She is really an amazing artist and I am proud of her.

We're taking Kate off sugar...again. Lol She had 4 cookies yesterday and icecream and I have visions of her getting diabetes so it is cold turkey for her for a while and then practiced moderation.

Can one be tired of surrendering? Why cannot one simply stay in a mode of surrender? Yet again I find myself needing to simply give up, daily as I am drowning in a world of what if's, what if's what if's. This morning on my surrender list, my entire life made the list, my: walk, kids, school, magazine, house, time, sins, LIFE.

Sometimes it seems like the only thing that is consistently great in my life is my husband. So I am REALLY REALLY thankful for that. Even if he doesn't read my blog or share my penchant for Law and Order.

I am looking forward to Christmas and miss Crystal so much, I wish she would move here. We are likely not going to be able to go to TN after all this year.

My Dad AND my Mom are now very ill and refuse much help and won't disclose anything. We found my Dad laying on his couch yesterday with no evidence that he had been eating. His door was wide open and he never even stood up once. I am not even sure he COULD stand up but was completely coherent and cognizant and 100% his difficult self so all we could do was go to the grocery store for him (that's the most he's ever really let us do) and stock up on what he wanted and then he shooed us out.

I realize that I am a completely different person now than I was when I first left Vero. Definitely better but definitely older. I never felt old before and while 40 is certainly NOT old, life's circumstances can certainly make you feel that way.

I am ever relating to the scriptures about aspiring to live a quiet life the other one about putting away childish things...

I guess I could stream endlessly here so I'll sign off for now.

See you all soon.

Well, likely that is not true but I will be in your vicinity soon anyway.

Hanging Chads

I have kept quiet for all this time on the election for all the various reasons. The Republican Party has no doubt, become a serious let down. So what is a responsible Christian to do? Vote Democratic? I think not. Sometimes choices DO have to be made like it or not, and while it is actually difficult to NOT like Obama's personality, that does not make him a candidate to stand for. In all the small print is where you find that both parties are so terribly corrupt. Seems the whole WORLD has gone democratic because our own CHRISTIAN right has gone so wrong. IN other words, it's our own fault for going so astray.
But a little hope glimmers through if we take it for what it is- and so yes, our family votes with whatever party hold up morality...even if it is just their tool to win and they couldn't give a dang...they still push the agenda that more closely fits the Christian's belief. THe following is a pretty good read. Those who have ears, let them hear.

Family News From Dr. Dobson October 2008

Dear Friends,

Can you feel the tension in the air? The nation--and indeed, the world--is holding its collective breath as the final days of the presidential campaign wind down and the candidates engage in one last round of electioneering and debating. By this time next month, we'll know whether Senator John McCain or Senator Barack Obama will be inaugurated in January as the 44th President of the United States.

Considering the stark differences between the two presidential candidates and the critical issues that are hanging in the balance, it's not difficult to understand why Campaign 2008 has been such a spirited affair. I'd like to take a few moments to consider what is at stake in this year's election, particularly for those of us who embrace a biblical worldview. Please understand that I will share these thoughts under the umbrella of Focus on the Family Action™, which has supported the preparation and distribution of this newsletter. Focus Action is, in turn, supported by contributions from those who do not receive tax deductible receipts for them. Thanks so much to you who made it possible.

Let's start with the need to elect a pro-family, pro-life President. The importance of this objective cannot be overstated. Between 2009 and 2012, there will likely be two or more opportunities for the President to nominate new justices to the Supreme Court. Some court watchers say there could be as many as four resignations. That alone should give us serious pause as we consider for whom to cast our votes. In the months ahead, the Supreme Court will likely hand down rulings that will impact America for generations to come. We need a President who will nominate conservative, strict-constructionist judges to the Court. If that doesn't happen, the highest court in the land could become stacked--even more than it already is--with justices who will endeavor to legislate from the bench and impose a liberal agenda on the nation. It will likely affect the definition of marriage, religious freedom, and the protection (or lack thereof) of life in the womb.

It's probably obvious which of the two major party candidates' views are most palatable to those of us who embrace a pro-life, pro-family worldview. While I will not endorse either candidate this year, I can say that I am now supportive of Senator John McCain and his bid for the presidency. This is not because I am beholden to the Senator from Arizona or to the Republican Party. Anyone who has even a passing familiarity with my views knows that I have agonized at times during this election process, and have been strongly critical of Senator McCain and the Republican Party on numerous occasions. My concern is for the biblical and moral values that I and millions of Americans hold dear. I will gladly support politicians of any stripe who are willing to defend the sanctity of human life, support the institution of traditional marriage, protect the country from terrorism and advance the cause of religious liberty. While certainly not perfect, the 2008 Republican platform comes closest to embracing those ideals by a wide margin.

In recent weeks, I have received some measure of criticism from those who feel that my "change of heart" toward John McCain is unwarranted. I understand those views and concede that the Senator continues to embrace positions that concern me. I don't apologize, however, for reevaluating our options in this election year. John Maynard Keynes, whose views I have disagreed with strongly, said this about reversing course: "When the facts change, I change my opinion. What do you do, sir?"1 In this instance, Keynes' perspective is correct. Every thinking person will eventually have reason to change his or her mind as circumstances evolve, as they have done during this long political ordeal.

There are four primary--and I believe compelling--reasons why I now view the McCain presidential candidacy favorably:

During the "Saddleback Forum" on Aug. 16, Sens. Obama and McCain fielded questions from the Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren. Senator McCain gave very solid and encouraging answers to questions about the sanctity of life and the institution of marriage, whereas Senator Obama came down at the other end of the argument.

You will recall the following interchange during the forum:
Pastor Rick Warren: "At what point does a baby get human rights, in your view?"
Senator Obama: "... Answering that question with specificity, you know, is, uh, is, above my pay grade."2

With all due respect, Senator, if this question is above your pay grade, then so is the job attached to it.
The Republican Party's 2008 national platform is a remarkably conservative document.3 Indeed, it is the strongest pro-life platform in the history of the party, surpassing even the pro-life advances of the Reagan years. It was approved and sanctioned by the McCain campaign.
Senator McCain selected an astonishingly strong pro-life, pro-family running mate in Governor Sarah Palin. Although he could have embraced a liberal Vice Presidential nominee, such as Senator Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge, he made the bold decision to join forces with a VP pick whose views reflect those of the party's conservative base. I'll discuss Governor Palin's candidacy in greater detail in a moment.
The longer the campaign continues, the more concerned I have become with Barack Obama's liberal views. Certainly, he is an attractive and very charismatic candidate who has embarked on a campaign of historical proportions. However, the majority of his policies represent the antithesis of principles I hold dear. Senator Obama's record is more liberal than that of any other Democrat in the Senate4--and that's saying something! For example, when he was a state senator in Illinois, he voted four times in three years against legislation that would have saved the lives of babies that managed to survive the abortion process.5 The U.S. Senate subsequently passed similar legislation called The Born Alive Infant Protection Act by unanimous consent.6 (Obama was not a U.S. Senator at the time.) State Senator Obama was chairman of the committee that opposed this protection of babies, and in 2001 and 2002 was the only legislator who rose to argue against the Illinois Born Alive Act.7 That is an undeniable fact!
My good friend, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum published a scathing analysis of Senator Obama's pro-abortion record earlier this year. Here is an excerpt of what he wrote:

In March 2001, [Senator] Obama was the sole speaker in opposition to the bill on the floor of the Illinois Senate. He said: "We're saying they are persons entitled to the kinds of protections provided to a child, a 9-month child delivered to term. I mean, it would essentially bar abortions, because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child."8 So according to [Senator] Obama, "they", (babies who survive abortions or any other preterm newborns,) should be permitted to be killed because giving legal protection to preterm newborns would have the effect of banning all abortions.9

To further underscore Senator Obama's radical devotion to abortion rights, he has promised that "the first thing I'd do as president" would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act.10 The FOCA is a devastating piece of legislation that would overturn nearly every local, state, and federal anti-abortion law passed in the last 40 years.11 In fact, it's so broadly written that legal analysts suggest the bill may prevent institutions and physicians from refusing to provide abortion services by invoking the conscience clause.

Earlier this year, while talking about sex education and abortion, the Senator said the following: "I've got two daughters, 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."12 In other words, a pre-born baby is viewed as a form of punishment, and can therefore be murdered in the name of convenience.

It is a matter of historic significance that Barack Obama has become the first African-American to capture the nomination of a major political party for the office of President of the United States. I applaud that remarkable accomplishment. Nevertheless, I cannot support his candidacy because the positions he holds on moral, social and family issues place him at the extreme left of the political spectrum. What the Senator believes and the policies he would seek to implement are on a collision course with the biblical principles and beliefs I have fought to defend for more than 35 years.

Turning the corner, the significance of Governor Palin to the 2008 presidential race is also worthy of further consideration. Here is a woman who is a deeply committed Christian, and who is pro-life not only with regard to her policies, but in her personal life. She and her husband welcomed their latest child, Trig, into the world even though he was diagnosed with Down syndrome while still in the womb. Approximately 90 percent of babies with Down syndrome are aborted,13 but Governor Palin carried her precious child to term and now loves and cares for him despite the challenges associated with a special needs child. Similarly, her teenage daughter, Bristol, who became pregnant out of wedlock, could have bowed to cultural pressure to seek an abortion. Instead, she and the father plan to get married and raise their child together. Governor Palin has been married for 20 years, and by all accounts, she is a portrait of Christian motherhood and womanhood.

As for Governor Palin's qualifications to be Vice President of the United States and to assume the mantle of President, should that ever become necessary, she is much better suited for the job than the talking heads on the liberal Left would have you believe. She came out of nowhere to win the Alaskan gubernatorial race against a powerful incumbent. While in office, she bravely fought widespread corruption--including that within her own party--in the face of great opposition. Govenor Palin's critics suggest that her experience as mayor of a "small town" is somehow a liability, but it is an asset. In fact, her time as Mayor of Wasilla and then as Governor of Alaska gives her a greater degree of executive experience than Senator Barack Obama can claim. Her qualifications to be Vice President, I would submit, exceed those of Senator Barack Obama, who spent only 143 working days in the U.S. Senate prior to announcing his run for President.14 He authored no significant legislation during that time.

I'm sure you have heard the shrill voices from the political Left decrying Mrs. Palin for any and every reason under the sun. They gloat over the pregnancy of her daughter Bristol and claim it as "evidence" that abstinence education, which Sarah Palin strongly supports, is somehow a sham. They criticize Governor Palin for daring to hold political office and run for Vice President while having a baby at home, even though the Left has for decades supported a woman's right to do just that. The attacks on Governor Palin and her family in recent weeks have been astonishingly unfair and mean-spirited. If she were a liberal Democrat, she would be praised and lauded for making the same decisions for which she is now being criticized. The double standard is obvious.

Governor Palin's decision to run for Vice President while raising a baby with special needs has given pause to some conservative voices as well. Some have even questioned my enthusiasm over Governor Palin's candidacy in light of these circumstances. It's important to note that although I have often said stay-at-home moms are vitally important to raising the next generation, I have never suggested that it is wrong for mothers to work outside the home. Indeed, Focus on the Family® has hired thousands of mothers over the years. I have said, however, that if a mother is going to enter the workplace, she and her husband must first find a way to meet the needs of their children. Sarah Palin appears to have done that. Todd, her husband, is actively involved in the raising of their children, and it seems obvious that Sarah will continue to be a positive force in her children's lives even as she carries out her duties in the political arena. Regardless of your political views, may I suggest that the Palins need our prayers, not our disdain, at this critical moment in our nation's history.

Senator Obama's selection of fellow liberal Democrat Joseph Biden (Del.) is also extremely revealing. While the National Journal ranked Obama the most liberal Senator last year, Senator Biden was ranked 3rd on their list--just ahead of Vermont's Bernie Sanders, a self-avowed socialist.15 While the Senator of 36 years from Delaware stands in blatant opposition to the pro-family movement, many of you will remember him from his vociferous opposition to several of our finer Supreme Court justices, namely, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Alito and Thomas.

Returning to our theme, America's future seems to hang in the balance at this time. Our next President will have a dramatic impact on countless legislative issues. Since being relegated to minority status in 2006, House Republicans have skillfully used the rules of parliamentary procedure to frustrate many of the Democrats' attempts to pass bad legislation. To this point, that effort has almost always been backed by a President who is willing to use the veto pen when necessary. The threat of President Bush's veto on hate crimes legislation and issues regarding the sanctity of life have kept a Democrat-controlled Congress from implementing its liberal agenda. Will our next President stand up to Congress in the same manner, or will he side with them, thereby giving the Democrats free reign to impose their liberal values on America?

It is likely, say the pundits, that both the House and the Senate in the 111th Congress will still be controlled by Democrats. If that party also takes the White House, a wave of anti-family, pro-homosexual legislation is almost guaranteed to pass in 2009. The bills put forward and advanced this year by Democrats reveal where they want to take the country. For example, they inserted hate crimes language into the 2008 Defense Authorization Bill, but were forced to remove it in conference, again under the threat of veto.16 While in the Illinois Senate, Senator Obama voted for a bill authorizing "comprehensive" sex education beginning in kindergarten. Defenders have attempted to downplay its significance, citing the fact that it called for the content to be "age appropriate" and "medically accurate"--dubious and subjective qualifiers given the sensitive nature of the topic and innocence of the audience!17 (When criticized for supporting this legislation, the Senator was dismissive and said proudly, I quote, "It's the right thing to do."18)

Large portions of the agenda promoted by homosexual activists will also be enacted. The implications for a federal hate crimes law are clear. People speaking against homosexuality have already been prosecuted under hate crimes laws both in the United States and abroad. If a federal hate crimes law passes, there will be little to prevent the government from endeavoring to control and curtail religious speech, especially from the pulpit. It is entirely possible that a pastor could be charged with inducing a federal hate crime simply by preaching from one of the many biblical passages that address homosexuality.

Congressional Democrats will also seek to pass the Employment Nondiscrimination Act, meaning businesses will be forced to accept and condone homosexuality--and possibly transgenderism--in making employment decisions. Further, business owners, including religious businesses, will not be able to make hiring and firing decisions based on their religious convictions. Earlier this year, Senator Barack Obama said, "I will place the weight of my administration behind the enactment of the Matthew Shepherd Act to outlaw hate crimes and a fully inclusive Employment Nondiscrimination Act."19

Finally, I am deeply concerned about the tax and spend policies Senator Obama will impose on the American people if he is elected, especially in light of the current financial crisis. This is not the time to be taking money out of the economy, yet, he has proposed enormous new federal programs and entitlements that will cost multiple billions of dollars. These initiatives cannot be effected without huge increases in taxation on businesses, which will be passed on to the public and to individual families. This will almost certainly require a return of the odious marriage penalty tax that plagued families for 34 years!

The races for the White House and the Congress are hardly the only matters worthy of concern in this election cycle. At the state and local levels, numerous policies and pieces of legislation are being put to a vote, and many of them are directly related to family and moral issues. For example, the definition of marriage is on the ballot in Arizona (Proposition 102), California (Proposition 8) and Florida (Amendment 2). Voters in Colorado will be given the opportunity to expand the definition of "personhood" to include all human beings from the moment of fertilization (Amendment 48). In South Dakota, voters will be asked to ban all abortions except those involving cases of rape and incest, or when the pregnancy seriously jeopardizes the life or physical health of the mother (Measure 11). Michigan is considering whether to legalize embryonic stem cell research, which would result in the killing of tiny human beings. In California, voters will also get the chance to decide whether minor girls should be required to give 48 hours' notice to a parent or adult relative before having an abortion (Proposition 4). Arkansas voters will decide whether to prevent couples living together out of wedlock--heterosexual or homosexual--from adopting children or serving as foster parents.

These are just a few of the important issues that, depending on which state you live in, will be on the ballot next month. I implore you to spend the few days remaining before the election researching the various amendments, ballot measures, and local and national candidates. Then, exercise your responsibility before God to vote on or before November 4th. Please, let your voices be heard. For more information, visit Focus on the Family Action's Web site.

Regardless of your political views, I want to urge Christians everywhere to be in prayer about this election. There are many scriptural references wherein King David "inquired of God" when he was faced by troubling circumstances (1 Samuel 23:2,4; 30:8; 2 Samuel 2:1; 5:19,23). It is time for Christians everywhere to turn to Him for guidance and wisdom. Find some time to be still and listen to what He wants to tell you. The National Day of Prayer Task Force, led by my wonderful wife, Shirley, has embarked on a national campaign entitled "Pray for Election Day." All around the country, individuals and groups are being encouraged to gather every Thursday leading up to November 4th between 12-noon and 12:30 p.m. Spend time with the Lord, asking Him to guide and direct those privileged to cast a ballot. If you are able, I would also encourage you to fast and pray immediately before the election. After all, it was the Reverend Billy Graham who once said that "To get nations back on their feet, we must first get down on our knees."20 Amen, Dr. Graham.

This election is about the future of the nation, but it will also go a long way toward determining the culture your children and grandchildren will come to know. I know you will vote with your children and your children's children in mind. That certainly puts the election in a different light, doesn't it?

You know my heart on these issues, and I hope you understand that I am less concerned with politicians and political parties than I am with the timeless biblical principles that those parties have the power to either strengthen or damage. No candidate is perfect, whether in this election or any other. Please don't make your decisions lightly. There is simply too much at stake. May God grant each of us wisdom as November 4th approaches.

Sincerely,

James C. Dobson, Ph.D.

Boring for some...but not for us reformers!

Dear Friends:

During the year 2009, the eyes of the world will turn to remember the birth anniversaries of the two most influential men of the last millennium — the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. (It is also the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s The Origin of the Species.)

No two men in the past thousand years did more to shape the thoughts of mankind or to affect the political and social destiny of nations than Calvin and Darwin — the former for the glory of God, and the latter for unimaginable evil.

The modern world knows much of Darwin, but it has largely forgotten and forsaken the message of Sola Scriptura bequeathed to us by Calvin and his fellow Reformers. Many lost their lives to bring the world the message that Scripture must be applied to every sphere of life, including the family, the church, and the state.

President John Adams was so impressed by this legacy and its impact on America that he warned: “Let not Geneva be forgotten or despised. Religious liberty owes it much respect.”[1] Reformation historian J.H. Merle d’Aubigne wrote that “Calvin was the founder of the greatest of republics. The Pilgrims who left their country in the reign of James I, and, landing on the barren shores of New England, founded populous and mighty colonies, are his sons; and that American nation which we have seen growing so rapidly boasts as its father the humble reformer.”[2]

Even secular historians agree. Leopold von Ranke concluded that “John Calvin was virtually the founder of America,”[3] and George Bancroft wrote, “He that will not honor the memory, and respect the influence of Calvin, knows little of the origin of American liberty.”[4]

Let it suffice that Darwin — and the widespread acceptance of his Theory of Evolution as it has been applied to philosophy, science, economics, theology, and virtually every primary academic discipline — has sadly done more to undo the work of Calvin and the Reformers than any other philosophical influence.

As to legacies: Where Calvin taught the inadequacies of the fallen mind of man, the supremacy of the law of God, and the sufficiency of Holy Scripture, Darwin’s Theory led to the supremacy of man’s reason, the rejection of Scripture, and to widespread distrust in the Bible as an accurate record of Earth history. The children of Calvin and the Reformers gave us the rise of nation states that embraced Republican representative government. The children of Darwin gave us Marxism and totalitarianism. Calvin’s legacy included respect for life, a defense of the biblical family, and the rule of law under God. Darwin’s philosophical progeny introduced the world to the horrors of eugenics and legalized widespread abortion on demand. Where Calvin insisted that law was transcendent, being created by God for the good of man, the followers of Darwin would insist that laws evolve and that transcendent standards of morality do not even exist. The reforms of Calvin resulted in Christendom blossoming. Darwin foreshadowed the darkness of modernity.

In sum, the battles facing the Church today reflect the tension between the antithetical worldviews of these two men. This is why for the quincentenary of Calvin’s birthday it is critical that we become familiar with those Reformers who shared his presuppositions and who inaugurated what many believe to be the most spiritually mature season in the modern history of the Church. Their cry was “Semper Reformanda” (always reforming), and this must be our cry today.

One mission of the 2009 Vision Forum Family Catalog is to help you do this — to reform and to remember. We begin with a cover image reminding Christians of the debt we owe to the Gutenberg Printing Press, a fifteenth-century technology which God used to mass-disseminate the Bible. More than five hundred years later, we are in the midst of a new digital technological revolution, and once again Christians are taking advantage of the medium to spread the Gospel. At Vision Forum, we are pleased to announce our part — the launch of Behemoth.com, a website that we hope will bless you as your one-stop shopping place for Christ-honoring, Gospel-advancing audiobooks, music, curriculum, sermons, videos, and more.

An important emphasis in our 2009 catalog is family reformation — the blessing of seeing the hearts of parents and children turn to each other (Malachi 4:6). You will discover this emphasis in our products aimed at equipping you to disciple your family. It was the solid biblical teachings of the Reformers that changed the way the world looked at the family. They emphasized family discipleship, the blessing of marriage, the importance of children, and the duties of a well-ordered household with fruitful mothers whose children call them blessed, and fathers of patriarchal vision who act as the benevolent heads of their homes. Our books and CDs reflect our passion that modern families embrace such a godly vision.

Finally, we are pleased to announce that Vision Forum Ministries will be sponsoring a national Reformation 500 Celebration during the week of July 4 — an unforgettable family event.

The Fifth Commandment tells us to honor our fathers so that it will be well with us, and so that we will live long in the land given to us by God. As Americans who have drawn deeply from the heritage of the Reformers, it is appropriate that we remember the faith of our fathers and inquire into the vision that inspired them and built our nation.
Persevero,

Here I am!

Good Morning Brethren!

Well, I am barely awake but the coffee is on and it seems momentarily, that I have conquered insomnia.

No TV allowed when I go to bed and regular exercise seems to have done it.
I despise the fact that it was that easy and it is too early to think that it is really licked but I slept all the way through last night and man, does that feel WEIRD. Aren't I supposed to feel more rested in the morning?

Took the kids to YMCA P.E. yesterday and they loved it. Rachel and Lauren. So we will do that Wed and Friday which will give me an automatic 2X/wk work out. I LOVE Zumba so that is another 2Xwk. WHAT a freak workout that is. I can't decide if it is a highly sexy thing to observe or just downright embarassing unless you have a size 5 body. I'll let you know in 20 llbs or so! I do not think it bad inherently, especially the way most of us execute it, but on the way home last time that song (I wish I knew who it was by) called: "I Just Want to Praise Him" came on. Do you know it? That really fast one? Anyway, it was SO Zumba and I was doing all the cool moves in my car on the way home and I thought, yep, Christian Zumba. I could do it. I do not know why I feel the need to turn everything in my life into Glorifying God. I mean, to my Christian Counterparts this sounds absurd of course. They would answer because you are SUPPOSED to. But that is not why I feel the need. I feel the need because it brings me great JOY to do so. And that seems a little selfish. But anyway, As I get healthier and stronger, I see a group forming of ladies who want to power out for the Lord!! Meanwhile, I'll keep salsa-ing it up in Zumba and know that those moves actually CAN be applied to the glory of God in some private settings. HAHA! Jeff should really read my blog.

I am finishing up Nov. issue and it feels good. As more things are added to my schedule this month I found I could still do it. Added are: clay class, tennis 4X/wk, Cake decorating, YMCA PE, and regular work outs for me. Plus I can still get the work done. I wonder, exactly, how much a woman can actually TAKE?
I as most of you know, am not a big proponent of being out a lot, at least not until the kids are influencers instead of influenees, but they have reached that point so we are letting them do more. The teachers have blown some serious sunshine my way and I have to admit it feels good. The fact that they are ASTOUNDED at the kids and their behavior? A little disheartening and serious affirmation that if we never cracked a book again, homeschooling is a far better option than public school.
The kids cannot understand what or why these kids are doing what they do and have thanked me SO MANY TIMES in the last two weeks for training them up "right".

Next month I go before something called the "Executive Roundtable". Sounds somewhat like a story of Camelot, eh? But here is where I present LFM and what our "initiative" is to the big wigs in the county. I think I have spoken of this before. (County Comissioner, Superintentdent, Sheriff, Head of DCF, Head of all Media companies, etc.) It is our final break out for "above the radar" status for LFM and either a sure to be quick boot out of public school or full on distribution which puts as at the very TOP of distribution of every magazine in this county and more than most in Florida in terms of non-national and non-state publications. WOW.
I am getting tougher skin though and that is kind of sad. I see the enemy at work for those who may be against what we stand for.

My ipod still sits in it's box and it is official. I am old. But that's cool. What's a little 40 amongst friends?

Joe Six Pack

Stream of Thought

I can't believe I didn't know Kirsten was pg!!

My throat has been killing for three days but I am NOT complaining.

Finishing up Nov. issue early I hope.

School going pretty well.

Back on the plan to get healthy after instituting a killer schedule of classes with the kids which I NEVER do but everything just happen to fall in the same month.

I keep thinking it is November because I work a month ahead and then get all freaked out that Christmas is next month and then remember we haven't even gotten to the Fall Fests, to trick or not to tick or treat issue and Thanksgiving so then I relax.

I realize that I should have a relatively quiet Nov and Dec if I just let the October classes END in Oct. and not continue them.

Lauren is racing through math like crazy.

Jeff rocks the house.

We are probably NOT going to TN for Christmas.

Life is good. We are getting a little concerned over the girls not being around other like minded families. Not sure what we are supposed to do about it.

Coffee's on, Daddy's up and I miss him so I gotta go!

I'm NOT a complainer...

I called my SIL yesterday so I could....complain. I didn't realize this until after we hung up. I was feeling sorry for myself and called her to lament. I get the idea that we all need to "vent", but I swear, if I hear myself say "I'm tired" ONE MORE TIME I think I may have to shoot myself. I am an eternally optimistic person. I love a challenge. I always assume I can do it. And normally do. But I find myself complaining a lot lately. And I don't like it. So I'm done. DONE complaining. I am GREAT. I am FULL OF ENERGY. I have ENDLESS PATIENCE. I am HAPPY, HEALTHY and FULL OF LIFE AND LOVE.
And if not, you still won't hear me complaining about it!!!
(Hopefully. As much. I'll try. I can't promise. Man!!!! This is sooooooo hard already! Lol)

Whoops..forgotten faves

Well, poor Lisa and Doug....I came across a missing pile of items that was supposed to make the basket..

a diet Sam's soda
a highlighter
the Ty Teddy Bear
and the envelope for the card.

Bet they didn't even notice!!! (But so sorry I missed them...they were set to one side and I just forgot to put them in!!!)

Honey, look what I found in the dumpster!

Ahhhh, every woman's dream....

Babe! Look at this dumpster find!! Can you believe it?
Cool honey! Uh, where do you want to put that exactly?
How about we paint it to look life like and put it in the front yard and watch the cars go by and slow down to see if it is real?!?!?
Uh...okayyyy...
Sigh.
You gotta love a boy.
I know I do. ;)
